Is the 2012 Porsche 911 Prototype Taking a Fiery Page out of the Ferrari 458 Italia’s Manual by :koye

Please tell us it isn’t so. During a routine test drive over in Steinegg, Germany, a 2012 Porsche 911/991 prototype has inexplicably gone up in flames. According to fire chief commander, Klaus Buchinger, the fire started in the engine bay and "the car has burned like tinder." Apparently, the car completely burned through in only 15 minutes. The cause for the fire is still unknown.

The vehicle testing was a special prototype developed for the Chinese market, but will be finding its way back to the Porsche center in Weissach for further examination. Once the malfunctioning element has been discovered and corrected, we’re sure the 2012 Porsche 911 will successfully find its way to its official debut later this year at the Frankfurt Motor Show. That, or it will continue to go down in flames like the first few Ferrari 458 Italia units. We’re hoping for the former and not the latter.

As a reminder, the 2012 Porsche 911/991 will be powered by a 3.4-liter, direct-injected flat-six engine that delivers a total of 350 HP at 6400 rpm and max torque of 280 lb-ft between 4400 and 6000 rpm. The Carrera S, on the other hand, will get a 3.8-liter flat-six with direct injection engine that delivers a total of 400 HP at 7000 rpm.

Back in 2008, German tuning extraordinaire, Mansory, took to the Geneva Motor Show with a spectacular package for the Ferrari 599 Fiorano called the Stallone. This package came baring 720 HP and a number of weight saving upgrades for spectacular performance. At the time, anyone would have been crazy to suggest to Mansory that the Stallone was not complete, but after three years and a couple of debuts, one guy thinks he knows just what the Ferrari needs to finish its look.

The brains behind the Stallone makeover is a TeamSpeed forum member and car enthusiast who feels that a matte red paint job, an updated interior, and possibly an extra engine/software upgrade or two would complete the package. At his request, Mansory prepared this one-off edition Stallone and the result is the beautiful machine seen in these pictures.

For the transformation, the forum member took inspiration from the 599XX and the 599 GTO, both revealed after the original Stallone package. The new Stallone’s interior, covered in Alcantara, was taken from the GTO, while the special shark wings on both sides of the car came from the 599XX. Next to these additions, the Matte Red Stallone also received a new rear with an integrated diffuser and new side skirts.

Mechanically speaking, Mansory tweaked the V12 engine by adding a new exhaust system, improved cats, and a remap of the ECU. These additions were then combined with a lowered suspension. All we need to hear now is the final output.

Ferrari 458 Italia starts drag race against Dodge Viper in reverse

You could say that the driver of the Ferrari 458 Italia was a little too eager in making his rival Dodge Viper eat his dust. You could even say that his heart was a racing a little and the adrenaline got the better of him. But to start a drag race like this with so many people watching? A little embarrassing, if you ask us.

Watch the video and you’ll see the Italian supercar and the American sports car in a nice and friendly quarter-mile race. Everything looks ready to roll except that when the light turned green, the 458 Italia went backwards. As in reverse. As in ’oops’.

The driver’s brainfart caused him to shift his car’s dual clutch auto transmission into reverse, which would have probably been more understandable if he wasn’t sitting behind the wheel of a 458 Italia.

But a car of that stature to start a drag race in backwards fashion is just well beyond humiliating.

The Ferrari World Design Contest is one of the most impressive design contests all over the world. This year’s contest was held in order to design the Enzo of the future and brought together 50 schools and universities (totaling to 400 participants) around the world with many outstanding designs from talented artists. Surrounded by the utmost in competition, the Ferrari Eternita - a concept car designed by Hongik University in Seoul - took home the gold. The second and third places went to design studies from IED of Turin and the Royal College of Art in London.

The Eternita impressed in terms of design, technology, and materials used. The designer developed a 1:4 scale model and paid lots of attention to reducing consumption with alternative propulsion systems. The Eternita’s power, in theory, will come from a hydrogen-hybrid drivetrain system with absolutely zero emissions. It sits mere millimeters off the ground and is designed so that the wheels mold into the body to reduce drag.

The model presented at the event had to measure between 420 and 470 cm and have a width of no more than 200 cm. The specifications were important to adhere to because the winning design would be the inspiration behind Ferrari’s next hypercar. Ferrari isn’t all talk and no walk either. Ferrari Millechili won the contest back in 2005 and his vehicle was used as a design inspiration for many of Ferrari’s models. This year’s winners - Kim Cheon Ju, Ahn Dre, and Lee Sahngseok from Hongik University in Seoul, South Korea - are off to their three-month internship at Ferrari where they will shaprne their skills in the automotive industry.

Ferrari and their out-of-house tuning firm, Michelotto, have wrapped up their initial development for the new Ferrari 458 Italia Grand Am and have begun testing the vehicle on the Fiorano Circuit. If the name for this new racer doesn’t give it away, the 458 Italia Grand Am was produced as the first factory-sanctioned Ferrari to compete in the Grand-Am’s Rolex Sports Car Series GT class under the current GT rules.

The Ferrari 458 Italia Grand Am is based on the GT3 version of the V8-powered Ferrari Berlinetta. The difference between the new 458 Grand Am model and the European version is that the Grand Am develops a total of 500 HP (and not 470 HP like other 458 Italia racing cars) at maximum revs of 8000. Slowing the North American Grand Am down is a 48 mm restrictor and less efficient aerodynamics than the GT version. Compared to a standard 458 Italia, the Grand Am model features a revised braking system (since the car is lacking ABS and traction control) and a roll-over bar which gives greater lateral protection thereby increasing safety. The car is fitted with tires from the Grand Am series’ sole provider, Continental.

The car has been designed, engineered and built entirely by Pininfarina, bringing to life something that, just a few months earlier, was just a dream and creating a sort of symbiosis between the customer and Pininfarina along the path leading to definition of this astonishing model.

Starting from a Ferrari Enzo, the aim was to produce a sole vehicle inspired by sport racing cars with extreme vocations: not just a show-car but a vehicle to be enjoyed on the road. After freezing styling with various touch-ups to the initial sketches, the surfaces were defined using CAS modeling, then moving on to actual construction and assembly. More than 200 components were specifically developed through constant interaction between styling and design: from the bixenon lighting clusters specifically designed with an innovative system of yellow and white leds to the alloy wheels – 20-inch aluminum – milled from the block up to and including the aluminum and special steel in-sight hinges.
