New Concept Car: Fiat Uno Cabriolet

Fiat has taken the wraps off this quirky Uno Cabriolet concept at the Sao Paulo motor show.

The new concept previews the open-top Uno, the latest of several different variants planned for Fiat’s new Uno small car range.

The Cabriolet is also the most sporty version of the new Uno seen yet. It gets LED lights, a lower front wings, a new bumper, revised front air intakes and a lower wing.

Other features include new wheels, flared wheel arches, a pair of chrome-effect roll bars over the headrests and twin exhaust pipes.

The concept is powered by a 150bhp 1.4-litre petrol engine and has a top speed of 124mph.

New Concept Car: Fiat Mio

Fiat has used the Sao Paulo motor show to unveil this innovative Mio concept, a car created online by more than 17,000 people.

Measuring in at a whisker under 2.5m in length, the mini Mio is shorter than a Smart ForTwo and features advanced interior technology features including mobile phone integration and touch-screen controls.

Minimalism is the key here, with its uncluttered and futuristic appearance, including camouflaged headlights, large glass roof, and covered wheels for added efficiency.

According to Fiat, the Mio evolved as part of an on-going interactive collaborative process through its website.

More than 17,000 people were registered as official collaborators; broad overall themes for the concept car were future urban mobility and sustainability.

Fiat’s design boss, Peter Fassbender, said: “A good designer tries to realise the wishes of everyone, and with this concept car we were truly working on everybody's behalf.”

The Mio was “designed for a world where the driver can be simply a passenger and can have the vehicle controlled through intelligent means.” according to Fiat.

New Concept Car: Nissan Mobility

The Twizy's near-identical twin is set to join the EV family! Renault's alliance partner, Nissan, has unveiled their very own take on the all-electric two-seater for its latest concept.

Called the New Mobility CONCEPT, the newcomer looks identical to its French brother and is powered by the same all-electric set-up too. That means the 20bhp electric motor is carried over, along with a range of 60 miles and a top speed of 47mph.

Most interesting is Nissan's thinking on what the New Mobility CONCEPT's role will be. Among the ideas are using EVs as a link between existing public transportation, improving mobility at tourist hot-spots and ‘2-mode EV car sharing’, where the vehicle is used as a private commuter vehicle in the mornings and evenings, and as a corporate car during business hours.

For the moment, Nissan aren't looking at putting the New Mobility CONCEPT into production, deciding to focus on the launch of its LEAF electric vehicle early next year. Meanwhile, the Twizy will be on UK roads early in 2012, costing around £5,000. For more details click here.

New Car: 2011 Renault Espace

Renault has revealed details of its subtly updated Espace and Grand Espace range. The revised people mover has been treated to a set of LED daytime running lights, new headlights and gloss black trim, while on the inside, the MPV gets Renault’s latest Carminat TomTom sat-nav.

Under the bonnet, the top-selling 2.0-litre dCi 150 diesel engine benefits from reduced-friction internals and new ratios for the gearbox, which combine to cut the carbon dioxide emissions from 188g/km to 170g/km.

The Espace and larger Grand Espace range consists of one trim level, called Dynamique TomTom. Both models are available with a 2.0-litre dCi 150 diesel, mated to a six-speed manual gearbox, or a 2.0-litre dCi 175 diesel with an automatic transmission.

The seven-seater Espace starts at £24,495 for the manual model and £26,995 for the auto, and Grand Espace models cost on an extra £1,500. The newcomer is available to order from the 8th November, with first deliveries in January 2011.

Options include an opening tailgate window for £320, a 2.46-square-metre panoramic roof for £1,300 and a rear-seat DVD system for £1,500. For more details click here.

Things are different now, and rabid demand for the Toyota Prius hybrid, BMW's Mini Cooper, and similar small cars shows that Americans can be persuaded to buy fairly pricey fuel-sippers, hence Mercedes' change of heart.
